Welcome to the Sessile Oak Tree

The oak tree is said to be the most important species of tree in Britain! Why do you think that might be?

Stand by the trunk and look up – how many species do you think might live or be supported by this oak tree? The oak tree supports more species than any other tree – up to 2,300 organism in one tree! Oak trees are one of the most special species.

Can you think of 10 animals, insects or plants which might live in or be supported by this tree?

Feel the bark with you hand – is it rough or smooth? Do the fissures (lines) go vertically or horizontally or both? Does it remind you of the skin of a big scaly reptile?
