Welcome to the Copper Beech Tree
Family Activity
- Look down to the ground beneath your feet.
- Can you see any roots popping up through the soil? Are you standing on one already?
- Imagine all the roots down there in the soil, not very deep at all from where your feet are now.
- Walk out as far as the branches go above your head.
- ‘Lateral roots’ can extend even further out than the branches above your head & they aren’t more than 2 metres down below you in the soil!
- What do the roots look like down there. What colour are they? How big are they? Do they look like they are hairy? Do they have little ‘feeder roots’ springing out from them, a bit like hairs?
- ‘Feeder roots’ absorb water & nutrients from the soil to help the tree survive!
