Family Activity

  • Have a look down the Promenade of beech trees. Can you count or guess how many trees there are all the way down the avenue?
  • Wouldn’t it be great if you could walk along the Promenade looking at the leaves and branches above you, without tripping over?
  • Let’s try have a go, we’ve got a special way to show you – but make sure the sun is not shining through the branches too strongly or this will damage your eyes.
  • The beautiful ‘roof’ of branches and leaves way up above your head is called the ‘canopy’.

  • As you walk down the slope of the Promenade you can play ‘eye in the sky’. Make sure someone is guiding you as you do this so you don’t trip or bump into something & choose a cloudy day or be sure there is plenty of leaf cover.
  • With a mobile phone, turn on the video setting and flip the camera around so it is on ‘selfie’ setting.
  • Hold it out flat in front of you so that as you walk the image of the leaf canopy above you plays on the video. Keep your eyes on this as you walk & you will feel as though you are walking in the air!
  • When you get near the end of the beech tree slope stop & think about how it has made you feel?
