Welcome to the Ash Tree
Family Activity
- Did you know that trees are made up of different parts?
- The base of the tree supporting the many branches is the ‘trunk’. How many trunks can you count growing up from the base of the ash tree?
- The section with branches and leaves on is called the ‘crown’.
- Right down in or on the earth supporting everything and bringing in water, oxygen and nutrients are the ‘roots’!
- How tall do you think the ash tree might be?
- Let’s find out! Do this on the grass on the side of the tree away from the path!
- Find a stick the length of your arm. Hold the stick in one hand & turn it so that it is upright.
- Start walking away from the tree backwards – but be careful, checking where you are going.
- Walk until you line up the bottom of the stick with the base of the trunk and the top of the stick with the top of the crown. Do this by moving closer or further away.
- When it’s lined up take big metre-long steps until you reach the base of the tree. Don’t forget to count them as you do it! The ash tree’s height is the number of steps you’ve counted in metres!
